Super Singer – This week

Vijay TV’s Super Singer was a mess-up this week.

– The show organisers formed three groups, Chennai, Kovai and Madurai. Each had five participants.

– On Friday, one from each group was eliminated except for the Chennai group.

– Harish, one of the best singers in the whole competition, from the Chennai team, walked out of the contest for personal reasons. It’s probably the same with Archana Iyer too.

– The groups were askd to perform two songs. One to show their harmony strengths. Two for the creativity.

– Chennai team performed Pachai Niramey and Madapura[Pathiban Kanavu]. Gowtham Bharadhwaj making those romantic twists, in the beginning of Madapura, seemed silly. Gowtham is a fantastic singer except that he is super artificial when he talks. And I think, he believes that he is probably the only good looking guy in the contest.

– Kovai team did a fantastic job of performing Kurukku Chirthavaley and Sorgam Enbathu Namakku. The Sorgam song rocked given the fact that they were dancing and singing it. Swathi of Kovai team is one helluva singer.

– Madurai team also did a good job. They sang Pani Vizhum Iravu and Kaatril Varum Geethamey. Rajini and Anitha are probably the best singers of this team.

Vani Jayaram, who was chief guest for this week’s show, didn’t enjoy the dancing and singing of Kovai team. She voted Madurai team as the best group singing team. And I think that wasn’t right in my opinion. Kovai was the best. One could see that from the reactions of Anuradha Sriram and Sreenivas.

– After all this, the lousy thing happened. As a part of their elimination strategy, each contestant was asked to vote-out one of their group members. This was only for the Chennai and Kovai as they lost out to Madurai Team. The results are to be announced next week.

If only Chinmayee, who is MCing the show, could shout a little less especially the bramandamaana kural thedal bit, a little bit, it might seem much better. Gayathri Jayaram on the other hand, in hosting the Vijay TV’s Grand Master show shouts her soul out. Shouting seems to be an essential quality for becoming a TV host in Tamil media.

Vani Jayaram is one of most boring artists. Years back she judged one singing competion on tv and she didnt even like singers enjoying the song with their fingers flikking (sodukku…). You must see the way she sings (stone!). Entertainment has changed, which she has not realised and thats why she still sings for Doordarshan.

Gowtham Barathwaj has a good voice.. but romba softness thigattum. I hated him when he was at Sapthaswarangal itself… Romba Srinivas typela kaiya bayangaramaa aattuvaar.

Sapthaswarangal was fun.. Ranjit, LN. Malar, Mangeetha Sahadevan (Sangeetha Mahadevan mispronounced by AVRamanan)… Good Ol Days..

Hey guys . . I’m moving to Seattle this week, and I see you guys seem to have seen all the latest Tamil films. Any recommendations on where to rent? Most places seem to be Hindi-centric.

    Hi Folks,

I have been watching Airtel Super Singer and I like it very much. I also totally agree with your comments on Goutam Bharadwaj. He is simply over-acting.

Regarding Vani Jayaram, there is no doubt that she is an excellent singer but you have to change with time. Kovai team is my favourite team esp. Swathi & Maya and what a creative performance was that? Simply mind blowing and that was the expression from Anuradha & Srinivas.

But I felt really bad when it was announced that each team has to eliminate one & I’m not sure who will be the one?

Another thing I just want to know regarding Harish & Archana, they both are brilliant at their singing and there is no doubt about that but why should they quit at this point? If they had made this decision earlier itslef, then someone probably a good singer might have got the chance. They have simply wasted a golden oppurtunity. I was very much disappointed about this.

But anyway I’m very much eager for the next episodes. (Atleast this time some vibrant & energetic judge should come)

    Bye Guys,
    Ums.

Ok ok i am going to divert the topic since you seem to be such a big kamal fan – How did he act like dwarf in apoorva sagodhargal? What was the trick behind it?

Guru, Apart from the contestants who are singing well, I don’t like anyother aspect of the program. Anuradha is too dominating, Unnikrishnan tried to be the hard judge (probably was asked to be one) and the program is simply playing with the emotions of the participants – trying to hype things, keeping things secret for the participants and capturing their emotions and showing it to everyone. Really poor guys. And on the bargain, look at what the participants get – a chance to sing with Harris Jeyaraj and a Swift car. I think for the ordeal they went through, this is really bad.

Hmmm…seems like an interesting watch. But I don’t like the reality tv antics like capturing emotions and flashing the moments on tv. I think that is poor ethics and shows lack of values. At least, in the case of participants who are being eliminated.

Regarding Vani Jayaram. She is probably in her 60s and grew up in an industry where singers are supposed to sing and that was entertainment enough. In this day of instant music access, we look for dancing and other antics. So she might not be able to digest that. In such a case, it would have been smarter of Vijay TV to look for some younger judge. It’s a bit hard to say that VJ is a boring artists.

Anuradha Sriram and Srinivas belong to an entirely different set of playback singers, even though they started late in cine career.

Airtel super singer is eee-adichan-copy of “Americn Idols”,”Canadian Idols” et al…
Points that can make you sick:
    The whole show is stage-managed.
The way the judges(esp. Anuradha Sriram–i think she is a better actress than a singer) are made to look very serious and giving an impression that they are “very keen” – it sucks man.
    The contestants themselves(barring a few)–singing tamil paatu like a mid-age opera–kadavulle!!
Unni/Sriram saying in English(for all you know this is a tamil programme!!)–“ungakitta–you had the pep–but the life was missing”—-wish somebody told these guys to get a life!!!

I could not watch more than 2-3 episodes!!!
I think I will settle for a lollu sabha or a vasooooooooool raaaaani than for this!!!

I can not imagine you wasting blog space for am utterly pathetic show–when there are so many other good things to blog about!!
    Excuse me please!

vikram, i think u r spot on. Srini, Unni and Anuradha are pathetic – from such accomplished singers, you expect better judgement. The way they articulate why they reject/pass someone is unconvincing – contrast this with someone like SPB – he does his program(unfortunately for tamil people) in Telugu/Kannada channels and he makes it a point to give each participant a clear appraisal of strengths and weaknesses and hwo to overcome those weaknesses. But then, he is the great SPB – cant expect that from Srinivas etc.
I am also furious because I had bet with my wife that this would be better than the Indian Idols and Sa Re Ga Ma pas simply because the Srinivases et al are more accomplished than Anu ‘thug’ Malik, Himesh ‘Mookku’ Reshammiya etc. And in general, the roster of songs we have to choose from is much much better than “Just Chill out” and “Soni Soni Aaja maahiye”. But I am disappointed that the judgement hasnt been any better than the Anu Malik formula of “Aap me woh josh nahin hai”.

    Hi,

My first time here. I saw a few comments about me in response to the post. I am Harish Sivaramakrishnan, a contestant of the Airtel Super singer. I had to withdraw from this competition due to compelling professional commitments. I work for a software firm in bangalore. The shooting dates collided with the release to manufacturing date of the product that I work for – Adobe Flex. It was a hard decision to make, since I knew what I was missing. But I just got lucky, as I have been given an opportunity to walk back into the show as a wild card entry. I consider this a great opportunity and I wish I can do some good work and impress the judges as well as the audience.

I look forward to your support for me in this competition, if you consider my performances up to the mark in the show.

    Thanks again,
    Harish

    Hi,

I think today’s (15.07.06) episode will be much difficult than the finals itself because all the 5 are very talented singers and only one has to be selected. The competition is going to be very tough & interesting as all the 5 participants will sing their best song and I like all the 5.

I was little disappointed at Swathi not being selected. (Such a good voice).

All the very best to all the five participants who are competing today.

    Ums
