Cool Song Crappy Video 3
Mani Ratnam should certainly be taxed for this. It has been my long time grouse on this song and the way it was made. While Andha Arabic Kadaloram isn’t certainly crappy as per Tamil cinema standards, I still think Mani Ratnam didn’t do justice to Rahman’s original number.
We all agree, that there was a good lead to the song, with Arvind Swamy and his beloved wife Manisha, kind-of spending their first time together in an apt after their marriage. As Arvind Swamy starts the heat, Manisha is still artificially shy, from the touch of her husband.
I think that’s a brilliant lead for a music composer and even the director to insert a song(yes, Indian cinema still believes in inserting songs and not making songs happen naturally). As the edit happens from the closed apt to an open location, it transforms smoothly with the shot of Sonali Bendre being unveiled from a translucent silky cloth and Nagendra Prasad shaking his head in a slow-kinda-motion.
Until that very second when Manisha loosens herself and starts to make some silly dance movements, the song sort of wades through easily. Right after this, the shots gets distributed irregularly between the actual dance situation and the apartment. All of a sudden, we see the odd smoke from the room when Arvind Swamy starts to dance, taking away the thrill of that pleasant moment.
Right at the end, when the notes increase to the next level, you see all that flames in front of the camera. What was Mani thinking ?
Even before I saw this song on screen, I was so impressed by the song and was imagining a different picturisation of this song. Probably my expectations weren’t met. I spoke to the Manager of Madras Talkies during the release and he echoed the same thought that the song didn’t come out as expected. They wanted Nagendra Prasad to slim down before the shoot and that didn’t happen. There was also news in the media that Rahman wasn’t so happy about the picturisation of the song, given his effort. Not just in composing but he lent his own voice to the song.
Overall a pretty shabby effort from one of the best directors of Indian Cinema. Not just shabby, it just spoiled a great number of Rahman’s early days. I wish Mani Ratnam reshot the whole song for his future movies.
Trivia : During the initial release of the music album of Bombay, the random rap bits of Rahman like Shighana Pagana Pagana tho tho weren’t included in the song and it was certainly a surprise to see it on screen. Just before 200th day of Bombay in select theatres, the second version of music album was released which had these rap bits and two extra bit songs, Malarodu Malar and Idhu Annai Bhoomi.

ஹாலிவுட்டில் எனக்குப் பிடித்த பல இயக்குனர்களில் குவிண்டிண் டரண்டினோவும் ஒருவர். சிலருக்கு குவிண்டினை ஒரு இயக்குனராக பிடிக்கும். அவர் அதையும் தாண்டி ஒரு சிறந்த எழுத்தாளர். சினிமாவின் இலக்கணத்தை கொஞ்சமாய் மாற்றிப் போட்டவர். ரொம்ப பேசுவதைத் தவிர்த்து, ஒரே காட்சியில் எல்லாவற்றையும் காண்பித்து விடும் சினிமா இலக்கணம் பிரபலமாகும் நேரத்தில், சினிமாவை மீண்டும் வளவளவென பேசவைத்து சுவாரசியம் சேர்த்தவர் குவிண்டின்.
குவிண்டனின் ரிசர்வாயர் டாக்ஸ் முதற்கொண்டு பல படங்களில், ரசனையான பேக்ட்ராப்பில், கதையின் திருப்புமுனைக்காக காத்திருக்கும் போது, பேச்சு வெள்ளம் ஆரம்பிக்கும். பேசப்பேச கதையோடு நாம் ஒன்றிப் போவோம். இப்படித் தான் கதை சொல்லியின் பக்கத்திலிருந்து நகர்ந்து கதை மாந்தர்களோடு ஒன்றாவது நடக்கிறது. இந்த டெக்னிக்கின் கில்லாடி குவிண்டின். அதைத் தவிர அவருடைய படங்களின் வரும் ரசிக்கத்தக்க பிண்ணனி இசையும், திரையில் காட்டப்படும் வன்முறையில்லா வன்முறையையும், ஆரம்பம் முடிவு என்பதே அதனதன் இடத்தில் இல்லா சாமர்த்திய திரைக்கதைகளும், அவரை பங்க் சினிமா(punk cinema)வின் தலைவராக்குகின்றன.
Rasied by Wolves : The Turbulent Art and Times of Quentin Tarantino என்னும் இந்த புத்தகத்தில் ஜெரொம் ஷரின்(Jerome Charyn) குவிண்டன் பிரபலமாவதற்கு அவர் லாஸ் வேகாஸ் நகரத்தின் ஒரு விடியோ கடையில் க்ளர்க்காக் வேலைப் பார்த்த போது அவர் பார்த்துத் தள்ளிய படங்கள் தான் என்ற ஒரு mythஐ இந்தப் புத்தகம் உடைக்கிறது. அவர் முதலில் நடிகராகவே விரும்பி அதற்கு மேற்கொண்ட பிரயத்தனங்களும், பின்னாளில் அது அவரின் படங்களுக்கு உதவியதை வேகமாக சொல்லப்படுகிறது.
ஆனாலும் குவிண்டன் பற்றிய ஒரு சலசலப்பை ஏற்படுத்த எழுதப்பட்ட புத்தகமாகவே எனக்குத் தெரிகிறது.
The Average American Male என்னும் ச்சாட் க்ளட்ஜனின்(Chad Klutgen) புத்தகம் ஒரு புனைவு. இதன் தலைப்பு எதோ ஆராய்ச்சிக் கட்டுரைப் போல் தோன்றினாலும், க்ளட்ஜனின் முதல் நாவல் இதுவே.
வழக்கமாக எழுத்தாளர்களின் முதல் நாவல்களை படித்து விடுவேன். பலர் முதலில் ஒன்றை எழுதிவிட்டு மீண்டும் மீண்டும் அதையே எழுதிக் கொண்டிருப்பார்கள். இவர்களின் முதல் புத்தகத்தை படித்துவிட்டு, மற்றதை விட்டு விலகலாம்.
லாஸ் ஏஞ்சல்ஸில் தன் இருபதுகளின் இருக்கும் ஒரு பெயரில்லா அமெரிக்க இளைஞன், தன்மை ஒருமையில் எழுதும் அவனுடைய அடல்ஸ் ஒன்லி கதை.
கேஸி(Casey) என்னும் சினிமாக் கனவுகளுடன் இருக்கும் ஒரு அழகான சற்றே பருமனான பெண்ணுடன் வசிக்கிறான். வேலையில்லாத போதும் அவளுடனே சதா சர்வ காலமும் செக்ஸ்ஸை பற்றியே நினைத்துக் கொண்டு வாழ்கிறான். ஜிம்முக்கு போகிறான். விடியோ கேம் விளையாடுகிறான். அழகிய பெண்களை கண்களால் கற்பழிக்கிறான். அவனும் கேஸியும் மூன்று பக்கங்களுக்கு ஒரு முறை கெட்ட காரியம் பண்ணுகிறார்கள்.
தான் கர்ப்பமாக இருப்பதாக பொய் சொல்லி திருமணத்திற்கு சம்மதிக்க வைக்கிறாள் கேஸி. அதிலிருந்து தப்பித்து அலினா(Alyna) என்ற ரொம்பவும் அழகான பெண்ணுடன் சுற்ற ஆரம்பிக்கிறான். இந்த மாதிரியும் பெண்களா என்று சற்றே பயமுறுத்தும் அளவுக்கு, அலினாவும் நம் கதாநாயகனும், ரெண்டு பாரவுக்கு ஒரு முறை கெட்ட காரியத்தை கண்டின்யூ செய்கிறார்கள். கடைசியில் தமிழ் சினிமாவின் ஒரு திடீர் திருப்பத்துடன் முடிகிறது.
இதைப் படித்துவிட்டு அமெரிக்க ஆண்கள் எல்லோரும் இப்படித்தான் என்றால் அது தப்பு. இதில் வரும் கதாநாயகனுடன் எல்லா ஆண்களுக்கும் கொஞ்சம் ஒற்றுமை இருந்தாலும், கொஞ்சம் மிகைபடுத்தப்பட்ட காரக்டர் தான் இந்த கதையின் நாயகன்.
ச்சாட் க்ளட்ஜனுக்கு இது முதல் கதை. ரொம்பவும் யோசிக்காமல், தான் பார்த்த பார்க்கும் விஷயத்தை வைத்து கதை நகர்த்துகிறார். கெட்ட வார்த்தை கொட்டிக் கிடக்கிறது. இளைஞர்கள் படித்துவிட்டு ‘கூல்’ என்று சொல்வார்கள். திருமணமான ஆண்கள் லேசாக சிரிப்பை உதிர்ப்பார்கள். பெமினிஸ்டுகள் காறி உமிழ்வார்கள். ச்சாட்டுக்கு இவை எல்லாமே நல்ல விஷயம் தான். கூடிய சீக்கிரத்தில் இந்தக் கதை ஒரு ரொமாண்டிக் ஹாலிவுட் படமானால் ஆச்சரியப்படாதீர்கள்.
அகஸ்டன் பர்ரோஸ்ஸின்(Augusten Burroughs) Running With Scissors ரொம்பவும் பிடித்திருந்ததால், Possible Side Effects என்னும் இந்த புத்தகத்தையும் படித்தேன். அகஸ்டன் தன் வாழ்கையில் நடந்த சிறு சம்பவங்களை கொஞ்சம் மிகைப்படுத்தி நகைச்சுவையுடன் எழுதும் நான்காவது புத்தகம். அமெரிக்காவின் நகைச்சுவை எழுத்தாளர்களில் அகஸ்டனும் ஒருவர்.
இந்தப் புத்தகத்தில், ரொம்பவும் பிரபலமான தன்னுடைய ஒரு பாட்டியை பற்றிய எழுதும் முதல் கட்டுரையிலிருந்து Julia’s Child என்று தன் அம்மாவை பற்றி எழுதும் கடைசிக் கட்டுரை வரை எல்லாமே சிரிப்பலை தான். ஆங்காங்கு தன் ஓரின சேர்க்கை விஷயங்களை பற்றி விரிவாக சொல்லும் போது கொஞ்சம் நெளிய வைத்தாலும், பர்ரோஸ்ஸுக்கும் வாய்விட்டு சிரிப்பதற்கும் ஏக பொருத்தம்.
அகஸ்டன் தன்னை சுற்றியுள்ள மனிதர்களையும், தன்னுடைய/அவர்களின் வாழ்க்கையை பற்றிய பார்வையும் அதன் ironyயும் தான் காமெண்டரிகளாக எழுதுகிறார். தன்னுடைய நண்பியுடன் சேர்ந்து John Updikeகை கொல்ல திட்டமிடுகிறார், தன்னுடைய ஆண் நண்பருடன் சேர்ந்து ஒரு உல்லாச பயணம் மேற்கொண்டு சற்றே பயமுறுத்தும் விடுதியில் தங்கி தன் பல்லை இழக்கிறார். லண்டனுக்கு ப்ளைட்டில் போகும் போது, Carrie at the prom (ஸ்டீபன் கிங்கின் Carrie நாவல்) போல மூக்கிலிருந்து ரத்தம் சொட்டுகிறது. அதற்கு பின்னால் நடப்பதெல்லாம் காமெடி தான். அவ்வப்போது அமெரிக்காவுக்கும் இங்கிலாந்துக்கும் ஆறு வித்தியாசம் போடுகிறார். சில முறை சோகமாக தன்னுடைய குடிப்பழக்கம் பற்றி எழுதி சிரிக்க வைக்கிறார்.
இதைப் படித்த பின்னும், சுமாரான படமாகவும் வந்த இவருடைய Running with Scissors தான் சிறந்த புத்தகம் என்பேன். கிடைத்தால் படித்துப் பாருங்கள். ரொம்பவே சிரிப்பீர்கள்.

The previous blogpost on Aamir Khan dropping his smoking, had some clarity issues, mostly on my part and the rest, also on me. It has happened here numerous times on this blog and thats partly the fun of blogging.
Blogging ? Seven years ago, if you had asked me the question, I would have blinked and walked past you. But not anymore. Ever since I read that small piece of article on rediff about 60 people reading Mahesh Shantharam‘s personal site, my life changed, quite a bit. I was actually on my way of becoming a writer, perhaps a blogger.
If you want the nerve-wracking, nail-bitting, edge-of-you-seats, tour de force story about this blog, scribbles of a lazy geek, here you go.
Seven years of living with an avatar(in words of World of Warcraft), that really didn’t mean anything to me at the time of its creation, wasn’t very tough as I thought it would be. The nom de guerre, lazy geek, was too cofusing for many to assosiate with kollywood film reviews, music and some fine arts crap. Once they found it was some one named Guru Subramanian, their interest levels dropped. And that was funny !!
Folks have called me by names, the ones that you wouldn’t like to be addressed on a private email. Some have called me names here in the comment space, warned me for harsh criticisms of their super heroes and their films. Some even called as it as the Worst Popular Indian Blog. Neverthless the nicer things have outscored the handful of critics.
Readers have always thanked for interesting content(?!) on this blog, commented ferociously to fight the comment trolls, ringed me to wish birthdays, anniversaries & milestones, become lifelong friends and also voted this blog thrice in a row, at the Indibloggies.
And above all, what I have learnt by running a blog, six long years(yeah yeah, I hear you. It’s only five. I was out for a year on sabbatical) couldn’t be achieved in anyway shorter than this. Thank You !!

ஞாயிறு
[#]கிழமையும் தான். ஆனால் முக்கியமாக, கதிரவன் aka சூரியன் பற்றி. சியாட்டலில், போன வீக்கெண்ட் தான் இந்த வருடத்தின் முதல் சூரிய வீக்கெண்ட். Sunny.
வெயிலடிப்பதே மறந்து போன நிலையில் போன வாரமும் வாரக் கடைசியிலும், சூரியனின் பார்வை பட்டது சந்தோஷமே. Sun comes out and the country freaks out என்பதில் உள்ள உண்மைப் புரிகிறது. குளிரிலும் ரிசஷன் பயத்திலும் உறைந்து போயிருந்தவர்கள், சூரியனைப் பார்த்தவுடன், கண்மண் தெரியாமல் குளுர் ஜாக்கெட்டைத் துறந்து, காரெடுத்துக் கொண்டு மால்களுக்கோ, சாக்கர் விளையாடவோ, ஆர்ட்டிபிஷியல் கடற்கரையில் கால் நனைக்கவோ போய் விட்டார்கள்.
மூன்று வருடங்களுக்கு முன்பு, இதே நேரத்தில் சியாட்டலுக்கு வந்த போது, மக்கள் சூரியனை பார்க்க ஆசைப்பட்டதை என்னால் புரிந்து கொள்ள முடியவில்லை. ஆனால், இந்த சூரியன் மிகுந்த வாரக்கடைசிக்காக நானே ஏங்கிக் கிடந்தேன்.
இனிமேல் ஒரு ஆறு மாதத்திற்கு, டிவியில் சண்டே நிகழ்ச்சிகளைப் பார்க்க ஆளில்லை. ரிவர் ராஃப்டிங்கோ, கேம்பிங்கோ, மலை ஏறவோ, பாரா டைவிங்கோ வேறெதுவோ செய்ய போய் விடுவார்கள். கிறிஸ்த்துமஸ்ஸில் சாப்பாடில் ஏறிய அத்தனை பவுண்டுகளும் இறங்கி அடுத்த கிறிஸ்துமஸ் சீசனுக்கு ரெடியாகிவிடும்.
இந்த வருட சம்மர் ரிலிஸ் படங்களின் லிஸ்ட்டோ சுவாரசியமாய் இருக்கிறது. ஸ்பில்பெர்கின் இண்டியானா ஜோன்ஸ், பிக்ஸாரின் வால்-ஈ, லாஸ்ட் சீரியலின் கதாநாயகன் மாத்தியு ஃபாக்ஸ் நடிக்கும் மேட்ரிக்ஸ் சகோதரர்களின் ஸ்பீட் ரேசர், க்ரோனிக்கல்ஸ் ஆப் நார்னியா, செக்ஸ் அண்ட் த சிட்டி, குங்பூ பாண்டா, நைட் சியாமளனின் தி ஹாப்பனிங், மில் மாஹரின் ரிலிஜ்ஜியஸ், ஹெல்பாய் 2, சமீபத்தில் இறந்து போன ஹீத் லெட்ஜர் நடிக்கும் கிறிஸ்டோபர் நோலனின் தி டார்க் நைட், ஜெட் லீ நடிக்கும் மம்மி 3, வில் ஸ்மித்தின் ஹான்காக், ஸ்டார் வார்ஸ்ஸின் கார்ட்டூன் படமான க்ளோன் வார்ஸ் எனப் பலப் பல ஹாலிவுட் படங்கள்.
எனக்குத் தெரிந்து ஒரே சம்மரில் இத்தனை எதிர்ப்பார்போடு வரும் படங்கள் இதுவாகத்தான் இருக்கும். சினிமாவா மலை ஏறவா என்று மக்களை தவிக்கப் போகிறார்கள். வெயில் காலம் முடிந்த கையோடு ஓட்டுப் போட்டு ஜனாதிபதி தேர்தல் வேறு. வெரி இண்ட்ரஸ்டிங் !!
