    Lyrics – Music India Online

Shot 45 years back, this is still the most perfect song ever shot for a tamil film. And then there is Pachai Niramey from Alai Paayuthey.

From the camera to editing to lyrics, music and performance, just about everything dazzles here. A classic example of aaberi raaga which has created magic in just about every song it has been used, on-screen.

Anytime Pasamalar is played on cable, the whole of Tamilnadu starts to shed a tear. A classic, it really is.

    Books ?

All the texts say that in order to gain release one should render the mind quiescent; therefore their conclusive teaching is that the mind should be rendered quiescent; once this has been understood there is no need for endless reading.

In order to quieten the mind one has only to inquire within oneself what one’s Self is; how could this search be done in books? One should know one’s Self with one’s own eye of wisdom. The Self is within the five sheaths; but books are outside them. Since the Self has to be inquired into by discarding the five sheaths, it is futile to search for it in books. There will come a time when one will have to forget all that one has learned.

    sujatha dravid
    [Source – Kumudam / Hindu]

and it seems it was only yesterday Sujatha wrote the super famous essay on aging. Happy Birthday Dude !!

BTW, I picked up vaathiyaar‘s picture above from a kumudam column. He was resembling Dravid and hence put them togehter to see if anyone except me felt the same.

    Update May 05 –

    1) Sujatha on Sujatha 71 and PG Wodehouse.

    Said that, baby !!

Quite often, the people whose side you’re on, politically, have absolutely no place for a person like you in their social, cultural or religious imagination. That’s a knotty problem… politically radical people can come at you with the most breathtakingly conservative social views and make nonsense of the way in which you have ordered your world and your way of thinking about it… and you have to find a way of accommodating these contradictions within your worldview.

People are constantly in search of idols, heroes, villains, sirens – in search of individuals, in search of noise. Anybody in whom they can invest their mediocre aspirations and muddled thinking will do. Anyone who is conventionally and moderately ‘successful’ becomes a celebrity. It’s almost a kind of profession now – we have professional celebrities – maybe colleges should start offering a course.

In this freak show, this celebrity parade, there’s no place for loss, or failure. Whereas to me as a writer, failure interests me. Success is so tinny and boring. Everyone is promoting themselves so hard.

And that was Arundhati Roy in interview with Tehelka, back in Nov 2005. Going by her own words, she might be offended to call her radical.

I’ve highlighted only some of the parts that I can relate so much with. Even if you constantly bash Arundhati Roy for her speeches, you’ve got to read this to agree with it. Via Narain.
