Vaaranam Aayiram aka Forrest Gump ?

Yeah, Dec 2006. Atleast that’s what the official website says. We know it started long after that. But it is slated to release for the pongal of 2008.

After a much derailed effort, Pachaikilli Muthucharam, Gautham Menon goes back to his legendary hero, Surya. And ofcourse, it’s his same old team except for the cinematographer. Sethu fame R. Ratnavelu takes on the lens department and this is the fourth change of cinematographer for Gautham. After RD Rajasekhar in Kakkha Kakkha, it was Ravi Varman in Vettaiyaadu Villaiyaadu and for Pachaikilli Muthucharam it was Arvind Krishna for Selvaraghavan’s camp. Now Ratnavelu comes from the Bala camp and is known for his realistic cinematography.

Vaaranam Aayiram is a great title for the movie and there should be a sub-text to it, other than the obvious strength-of-thousand-elephants message.

In Nov 2006, Sify reported that the movie was named Udal Porul Aavi and it was gossiped to be a super natural thriller(!!). The wiki page states that this could be kodambakkam’s version of Forrest Gump. Hopefully Gautham didn’t gulp vodka on the rocks before watching Hrithik’s Krrish and Hank’s Forrest Gump, back to back.     On Vaaranam Aayiram, I think the connection to Forrest Gump is only that Gautham mentioned once that it’d be his version of the latter, which I presume will be vastly different from Forrest Gump.
    I think, he meant to say that it’s not going to be like Forrest Gump, but similar in the sense that it will be one man’s extraordinary journey (running through the state’s history, should I daresay?). He mentioned even Rocky once talking about this film, for that matter!

  9. Hmmm. Was wondering what gets substituted for the long runs, vietnam war experience, table tennis, the shrimp fishing fleet and the limited IQ of Forrest. Do all of these come naturally to Surya? If Gautham can pull off a Zemeckis then Hanks would be a no-brainer for Surya. Go hero

    Suresh, If thats the case then it would be a total copy. However Gajini was bad except for the surya-asin romance.

    Saar, Even if we don’t give him that status he has already penned a book, Ippadikku Surya, claiming the legendary status himself 🙂

    SMK, Long run would be escape from pudhupettai, vietnam war would be the non-hindi movement alongwith MuKa, the limited IQ with sappani, table tennis with krish srikanth’s cricket.

  12. Pachaikili Muthucharam a “derailed effort”. The pun intended? And btw, looks like disappointing ppl is the trend nowadays. First disappointment being Gautham’s Prey & Play and the next being the recent Shankar’s Mudhalaali and Gautham again with his derailed effort.

    Note that in the three cases the directors have disappointed but the actors had 200% scope to prove their acting & stunt skills/
