As I bike across the stretch of GST highway from guindy to tambaram, Aayitha Ezhuthu hoardings and banners keep springing up slow and steady. It is not that I am amused for the first time about Mani Ratnam‘s strategy on his film’s promos. I’ve always liked the strategy of slow approach that he takes to keep his audience guessing. Be it Thiruda Thiruda which flopped heavily in Box-Office or be it Roja which sweeped the Box-Office like the Andra Pradesh election assembly results, his strategy has never changed.
Aayitha Ezhuthu’s teasers were out a month back. What has to be conveyed through the teasers are done. Now it’s time to set the ground for more expectations as the movie opens up next week (May 21, 2004). Even the second level of trailers are out on TV Channels. It shows a much detailed description of the three characters and the conflict that happens in the Napier Bridge. Of course, the conflict could me heard and not seen. If you are blinking about what the conflict is wait and watch the movie or read Amores Perros’s synopsis.
Madhavan as Inba Sekhar seems to sweep the Aayitha Ezhuthu trailers with his cool attitude as he appears before the mike in a gathering and says Vote for Inba Sekhar. Many of my friends feel Madhavan and Bachchan will be the best among the six characters of Aayitha Ezhuthu and Yuva. From the trailers it looks like their assumption is right but it’s too early before the release to ignore Surya.
When I was in Satyam theatres to watch Main Hoon Na, I could see the Aayitha Ezhuthu and Yuva posters drawing huge crowds and if you lend your ears there for sometime, you might even get some cool assumptions of the movie. Someone said, that Madhavan liked the character of Inba Sekhar which prompted him to debate with Mani Ratnam for the same role in Yuva too. The other common statement was that Isha Deol looked very old as she pairs Surya in Tamil and Ajay Devgan in the Hindi version. Well, I only wish Mani and his team would endorse these assumptions/facts (??).
And as I watched the new Yuva trailer during the break of Main Hoon Na, I could see Kolkatta shining in Ravi K Chandran’s camera.
You can find some more pictures on my photoblog on how Chennai gears-up to welcome Aayitha Ezhuthu and Yuva.

One thing I am very sure…This summer will sizzle with Yuva and Aayitha Ezhutu!!!!!
And my bet is that Madhavan and Abhishek will take the acting honours even though Soorya and Ajay Devgan too will put up a first rate act.
But just one query, will Yuva ( the hindi version) release in Chennai??

Are you sure movie is remake of “Amores Perros”? I have seen the movie: there are three stories which intersect in an accident and spiral out after that. Unfortunately only one of the three stories is interesting (it stars Gael Garcia Bernal, Mexico’s answer to a young Kamalahasan). Hopefully Mani has written has written out his own stories instead of just lifting the original ones.
And I can’t help but say “Jaggu Bye Bye”

Me watch Amores Perros tomorrow night (me got the DVD with me right now) and from IMDB’s synopsis, other than the tag-line nothing else seems to match, certainly not the teasers.

ashokk, The Hindu’s “interview” with Mani Ratnam a couple of days ago in the Life section mentioned Amores Perros. From the article i sort of got the impression that the reference to Amores Perros came from Mani’s mouth.

Yuva will be released in Santham and Mayajaal. Checkout Today’s Hindu.
Tamil is Mani’s own turf and AE dialogues r written by Sujatha. So I would prefer AE than Yuva.

If its a plain lift from the original, its going to be a big disappointment.Hope Mani maintains his originality.

Mani has never done a straight lift from a Hollywood film. Every now and then, he is just guilty of a peccadillo – copying a few scenes from the original and incorporating it in his films in such a way that it suits native sensibilities. I am willing to forgive him for that 😉 He is undoubtedly a fine and nuanced filmmaker. The cine-world will be a poorer place without the likes of a guy like Mani.I am eagerly looking forward to AE, and I am sure that It will deliver in a huge way, atleast for a discerning cineaste like me.
Amores Perros was bold and brilliant! Its criss-crossing storylines, non-linear structure and its sheer rawness in the depiction of events on-screen makes it a must-watch. If AE functions on similar lines, Its gonna be the movie event of the year undoubtedly, box-office implications notwithstanding

I managed to get hold the “original” CD here in the US. The song Janaganama is clear inspirational stuff from the master.
This is the first time I am visiting this Blog, quite well done by Mr.L.Geek, I am sure I will be back to check his scribbled articles again.

Mani Rathnam is one of the most over-rated film makers of India. I used to be in awe of him until I started viewing movies made by other, more talented, less-hyped directors like Raj Kumar Santoshi (in Hindi) and Balaa and Cheran (in Tamil). I believe Mani’s appeal is limited to urban India and movies like Bombay and Kannathil Muthamittal did little justice to the grand agenda they had set for themselves. I hope his latest movie does not deal with any communal issue or try to offer overly simplistic solution to complicated national problems. I hope Ayutha Ezhuthu sticks to real-life people stories like that rare gem Mouna Ragam.

Balaa in the list of better dirs than Mani?.. it’s a great joke.I don’t know what greatness lies in making the lead man to die or to make him mad jus for the heck of doing it.Sympathy creation and melodrama are the tools Bala has used in his career so far with his 3 movies.
As for as reality is concerned Mani is more realistic than Bala anyway,(where u have seen a cremator behaving like animal..roaring,biting?..)

Balaa better than Mani?? You must be kidding me Vadu!! Bala is a wretched and over-rated filmmaker. All his films have characters that come across as crackpots, eccentrics and brooding maniacs exhibiting misanthropic and atavistic – for lack of a better word – behavior(How else could you explain Vikram’s over-the-top characterization in Pithamagan??!!) Apparently, subtlety is a trait that Bala has never come across in his life…Give me Mani’s down to earthness any day over Bala’s recondite idiosyncrasies..

How does it matter if AE akka Yuva is an inspiring remake” of the Mexican original “amores perros” ?
The magic spell of Mani ratnam is incomparable. He is one hell of a unique personality.
I get the impression people are looking forward to seeing Mani ratnam handling the movie than the actors
Kudos 🙂

who is the bala ass? let him try to make powerful movies with the characters speaking as litlle as possible..that is the thing with mani’s movies..no preaching..the camera just lands there and observes…
rajkumar santoshi! has this pompous self-opinionated comment writer even managed to count the number of cliches and lecture baazi sessions in “khakee”..gosh! u must be out of your mind man.
and alaipayuthey..two new actors..beaten track.yet a masterpiece..how? talent my people.talent.

also about yuva,, he says that one incident changes their lives..im sure that they get together for something unlike amores perros..im willing to bet that it wont be a remake..whether the non linear screenplay is inspired is something to be seen.
but come on..lock stock and 2 smoking barrels is superior to pulp fiction but pulp fiction got there first in terms of screenplay.
way to go mani sir.rock the seats and hit the ball out of the stadium.

Folks….don’t fight over Mani. I guess there is some sense in both points of views. Lets leave it at that!
Now…I have this feeling that Mani has a hidden agenda of promoting Maadhavan in this film whith that image he badly needs (or wants)- the “Macho” image. Surya…probably would have been better suited for that role. Having said that…Surya might be the better person to play the lead role as well. Mani is well known to have given a break (and promoted) Kamal and Karthik…now with AE ….may be Maadhavan. It is ok to do this (Madhavan is talented and the guy needs a break)but shouldn’t come at the cost of talented and versatile actors like Surya & Vikram. Its about time Mani makes use of these two and come up with some masterpieces!!!

As for Amores Perros, I saw it last night. And I agree with Vijay. But the point is, if the techinal aspects of the movie were to be replicated in India, I doubt it would ever reach the masses.
And again I have to stress what I said upon reading AP’s IMDB plotline. AP’s three main characters are a teen, a supermodel and a tramp like assasin and from AE/Yuva promos we know the general characters!
There seems to be no similarity whatsoever between the two movies apart from the tagline and that accident.

Wasn’t Thiruda Thiruda a remake of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid?
I doubt AE will be a remake of Amores Perros. It might have some stylistic inspirations, but not a direct lift. But I’m done looking forward to Indian films, as every time I do, I am disappointed. I’ll see AE with the hope, but not expectation that it will be good.
I thought Pithamagan was hugely overrated. I liked that it wasn’t your usual story, and that it was about these sort of fringe outcasts of society, but it included too much standard elements such as a rich evil villain. The Simran scene was way too long. It should have been 5 minutes at most. Bala has potential to be an interesting director, though.
And Pulp Fiction is better than anything Guy Ritchie has done 🙂

ahh!! I remember those days when they flamed me and anti for that Mani Ratnam Vs Bala stuff. It was however interesting to have many view points.
Saw Sethu yesterday in Sun and I have to admit, it didn’t impress me a bit even this time.
anyway, tickets for AE are thrown in full speed. Mayajaal features both AE and Yuva. Thinking If i could see AE and then enter straight into the next theatre for Yuva.
