Illayaraja Live Concert at Chennai – Oct 16

From the Chennai Online report –

Ilayaraja said he was putting together singing talents from all over India which is an experiment in bringing the audience closer to sound and beat with special sound effects.

“I wanted to try something very different and exciting. The show will combine a whole set of live elements that are still being put together,” the music director said.

Unquestionably a show to look for.

    Vintage Salman

The Hindu calls Shalimar the Clown as Salman Rusdhie’s comeback book. Even as longtime favorite John Updike didn’t nod his head too well in his review, I kept fingers crossed. Though one can’t sure if thats true, until he reads the book for himself, its the kind of conscious bias towards Salman Rushdie that makes me think Updike was miserably wrong.

It seems to be a fad to build a story about intertwined lives. Rusdhie puts it as “everyone’s story slipping into everyone else’s story”. Its on a long waiting queue at the library and until I could read, I’m fantasizing with these reviews.

From the The Hindu review –

Shalimar is vintage Rushdie, whose characters, even in their most absurd or dark moments, remain human.

Their behaviour may be cruel, condemnable and seemingly inexplicable but seldom beyond understanding. It is through their motivations that Rushdie explores what he described, in an interview, as the idea of the “worlds in collision” — the clash of “two alternative realities competing for the same time and space”. Presumably, these alternative realities are love, tolerance, freedom and debate on the one hand, and hate, anger, intolerance, extremism and violence on the other.

Blogging is stupid; go be a human being

Not me but Heather Burns at The Pine Log writes –

Blogs aren’t just stupid, they are crippling our social skills, and there is nothing better than human interaction, trust me.

Believe it or not, there is a world outside of the computer. No joke, it has trees, popcorn and drive-thru liquor stores.

Blogging is worse than being on facebook. Nobody wants to know if you have cramps today or if you sold 1,000 pounds of Nicaraguan cocaine to Chico and the man.

The people in your life like friends and family do care if you show up to the party and do a minute keg-stand or date that really cool guy from Nicaragua who is friends with Chico and the man.

To lay it all on the line, blogging is a waste of time. Why spend time telling strangers your innermost thoughts when you could be out making memories with those you care about most?

    On a Rainy Friday !!

Chenthil is presently the most linked man in the Indian Blogosphere. With his blogpost on the moral policing happening at Chennai, the blogosphere seems afresh and there is so much of linking and debating going on in this issue. I have my own crib on the Tamil media/matter/morality issue. Nilu is calling for a Lagaan team to show what bloggers are for the system. Check out, you might be interested.

Ammani’s recent quick tale a.k.a fast fiction[as I like to call it], Death of a Friend, was fantastic. We are such humongous hypocrites !!

They wouldn’t allow a ‘good’ director to stay in shape. Ab Tak Chhappan‘s Shimit Amin signs-up for a Yash Chopra banner starring Shahrukh. Rule No.1 in B(K)ollywood – If anyone makes meaningful cinema, make him direct an outright masala as his next movie and he will become one among equals. Huh !!

Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara could be a masterpiece but Urmila, like Kamalhassan, talks too much about the subject during the release of the film. The dudes at Rediff title the interview as Meet Urmila, Gandhian Thinker. Give me a break !!. I am eager to watch it, however.

Oli Oviyar(!!) Thankar Bachan’s Chidambarathil Oru Appasamy takes a beating from The Hindu. Update – Get appreciated by Vikatan [44/100].

The ban over the on-screen smoking in television is pushed to Jan 1, 2006. Inimey vaithaaa vaithaa vaithaa thaan. Read previous cribs on the ban here and here.

With the ideal husband / lovable loverboy looks, Arvind Swamy was the perfect drool over material of 90’s. Now, sports a tiny french beard and seems like a Pritish Nandy wannabe. Via Sneha.
