2007 was a good year for Kollywood. Ram’s Katrathu Thamizh, Ameer’s Paruthi Veeran and Vetrimaran’s Polladhavan were all released during this year. It was the year of directors and new comers. And so Vijay Awards 2008 was also just so neat. It had the perfect host, Yuhi Sethu. Vetrimaran was the director of the year. Paruthiveeran was the movie of the year and Sreekar Prasad got the best editor award for Katrathu Thamizh. Except for mishaps like Sivaji and Pokiri, it was a fabulous year for good Tamil cinema.

And what a night it turned out to be when the final award, Lifetime Award for contribution to Indian Cinema was given away to Mani Ratnam. As usual, the man of few words, spoke less than few words.

Vijay TV probably makes the best montage among Tamil cable channels. This montage on Mani’s films was short but well edited. I only wish, they made a full length candid interview with Mani Ratnam just like the one with Writer Sujatha. This video will be a treasure until such interview is made in future.

I rejoiced when mr.nayakan walked away with that prestigious award. It made my day !!

    Keerthi,

you are right. sometimes, its that way when it comes to lifetime achievement.

in terms of being a prestigious award, aayitha ezhuthula sujatha dialogue maathiri, century adikanumnaa kuda single-la irundhu thaan aarambikanum.

In my opinion, Vijay TV is a very level headed “panakaara” channel. This is the second year of vijay awards. Just like Filmfare became the de-facto award for indian cinema, Vijay TV can also become in. Its the time that matters.

If only, I say that again, If only they could sustain the good jury decisions for next 5 years, i think they will also become one of the prestigious awards.

Mani is one usu director…..he does not have any guts to tell anything…..all his movies are basically the same…feel good stuff….just because we grew up watching his movies, does not make him great

What makes you call ‘Sivaji’ a mishap? I don’t really understand. May be because it did a world of good to tamil cinema? You must be crazy to deny that it was a global hit and had a huge response all over the world.

Also, whatever the blemishes are, you praise dasavatharam and go on to say that is a class act and always criticise rajini and his movies. Why is that? This attitude is with all the illusionary intellectuals like you.

rara, i am not sure what makes you say that Mani does ‘feel good movies’… perhaps you have him confused with Perarasu? while you are at it, you might as well say that Mani Ratnam is the one who pioneered ‘punch dialogues’ in his movies!

LG/ Gowri Shankar – it was only a matter of time before someone (in this case, GS) who would respond to that barb about Sivaji but you have to admit LG does have the BALLS to call a spade a spade 😉

GowriShankar, Like what ? Adding millions to the pockets of Rajini, AVM and Shankar.

If you call this as doing good to tamil cinema, Chandramukhi did a better job than Sivaji. At the best Sivaji ate up hundreds of terabytes of cable television bandwidth. Nothing else !!

It was entertaining at places but overall as a movie it failed to engage. watch it again now and tell me if you like it, truly.

    @ Kumaresh,

Do u think that u are the most brilliant and intelligent cinema fan/critic in the world? Simply praising Dasa and Kamal doesn’t make you a intelligent. Grow up dude!!Thanks for calling me ‘peanut’ brain. Atleast I have a brain…

    @ Lazy Geek,

What troubles you if AVM and Rajini earn money out of it? Avanga enna thirudinaangalaa illa kollai adichaangala? That ‘so-called’ boring Sivaji got the international recognition and atleast ppl started knowing abt tamil films. Dasa is a good movie, it was boring for me in the second half. It failed to engage. Otherwise, the theme and everything is excellent.

Regarding Sivaji, I have already seen that movie 18 times in theatre.

    Thanks!!!

Atleast we have the rights to criticise the movie since we watched it in theatres. Thiruttu VCD la paathuttu neenga ipdi oru comment pannradhu sari illa. Moreover, TV la paathaa pidikkum nu oru vinothamaana othukkave mudiyadha comment vera kuduthirukkeenga….!

ARR got a lifetime achievement award at 40 and look at his speech. Both these guys (Mani and ARR) bowl me with their grounded nature and humility and their lies another face of their greatness…
