Kamal – Ananthu – Jean Claude Carriere

Jean Claude Carriere

Hurray !! This was what I was looking for.

In an interview, after Ananthu‘s demise, Kamal Hassan recollected his thoughts on Ananthu, his mentor, very effusively. While he agreed that its time to move on with Ananthu’s memories, he remarked about his recent friendship with a french playwright who helped him with the French version of Marudhanayagam’s screenplay. I did blog this on my Marudhanayagam blogpost. I did miss that French playwright’s name when it was mentioned by Kamal. From then on, I was on lookout for the playwright’s name and unfortunately Kamal didn’t talk about him in media.

Now, in his recent Vikatan column, Love Pannuda Mavaney, he writes about his acquaintance with that french playwright. Jean Claude Carriere. And he details the meetings and the passionate discussions on cinema that he shared alongwith Carriere for 3 weeks in London. Kamal Hassan describes about the initial meeting with Carriere and how Carriere was impressed with the English version of Marudhanayagam’s screenplay which lead to Carriere accepting to script the French version for a throwaway price.

After Virumandi, when Kamal called up on Carriere, he was introduced by Carriere to Milos Forman, the director of hits like Amadeus[on the genius of Mozart] and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

The column is in Tamil and its a must read, especially if you have heard the name Kamal Hassan.

The article was good. But still I’m not able to decipher the link between theme of “Love Pannuda Mavane” series, Milos Forman and Jean Claude Carriere.

True. The last place you would look for such a thing. It happens. Probably Kamal didn’t get a better place to talk about this interesting people.

I’m last to worry until it sounds interesting to me.

While I am not sure whether it will made or not, I am sure in saying that it has to be made.

Not that this is the only film that may showcase the south indian talent, this is a film born from a dream of a man who has done some good stuff for the tamil films. Other than that I have no reason to crib for Marudhnayagam.

Even if M.Nayagam doesn’t surface, we can still make good tamil movies, provided we have such undying dreams and persuasion.

i can smell tremendous difference in Kamal’s flow of writing, from the first episode of “Love pannuda mavaney !” till the most recent one.. he matches the narration skills of Sujatha, and his tint of Humour and naturalistic descriptions..is awesome.

i have no wonders if kamal starts doing more of writing..with Love pannuda Mavaney being a decent hit.

    Hi,
I completely agree with santhosh.I scratched my head for few hrs to get the connection btwn the theme and Kamal’s exp with Carriere.Still his exp was nice to read.I wish his Marudhanayagam is made at some point in his career. If that doesn’t happen then its sure that we are missing a masterpiece from him.

    Hi ,
On what basis did u choose ur name? It dosen’t seem to suit u at all. If u are a lazygeek then what am i to call me. One question, Are u married? How do u find time for everything? U have such a varied interest and seem to spend adequate amount of time for each interest. Bcoz iam married and i have varied interests, but i don’t have time for everything( i know i hate to use this phrase , as my uncle use to tell, ” work extends according to time available”) I used to keep it in mind always and try my best, But still i found u amazing. We ( me and my husband) are regular readers of Not-so-lazygeek .Voila!! i managed my time to post this comment on the same day we thought of posting it.

    Hi,

Just curious to know about Kamal’s new venture Mumbai Express. Any idea about the story? Is it a remake of Malayalam movie “Yaathrakarudae Srathaikku” by Jayaraman & Soundarya?

kamal has been living and working in the film industry for the most part of his life and it is natural some his interesting and inspiring moments in life will be connected to fellow film personnel in one way or the other. It is inevitable for him to not mention them. Why milos forman and Jean Claude Carriere – MAYBE because they, particularly forman has been married 7 times and i understand it as a mere comforting factor for kamal, if not justification, that he has had a similarly polygamous life like his inspirers.Just a thought.

The series is a good one from Kamal. Although the latest article in the series is a little bit boring. I should confess that I like the not so geekish series by vadivelu in Vikatan more fun to read than the geeky and at times gawky articles by Kamal.
