Never. That title was just to attract the attention just like Parthiban‘s own ways of alternate advertising. His start-up of a promo company Gossip takes care of the promos for Kudaikul Mazhai. The long awaited movie that has triggered expectation by just its trailers, is releasing this friday.
Today’s dailies featured an adv for Kudaikkul Mazhai. In the ad, Parthiban while approving piracy for his movie, suggests that atleast for the first four weeks if people could restrain from watching pirated video of the movie, the producers can make some money, enough to fix their spendings. An unusual plea. But that’s what you can expect from the very different Parthiban.
Shankar’s Boys had a similar trailer which bragged on the flamboyant production values of the movie and adviced, if the movie was to be seen in the small screen, it would reduce the entertainment levels. Cheran, for his Autograph had a different request to the public. He said if people were to see the movie as a pirated video, if they liked the movie by chance, they can support the movie by sending the cost of a single ticket to him personally. And they said he did get a lot of mails with money attached. I am not sure if this was true but I did read this news in the magazines.
As the proverb goes, producers/directors who are unable to control piracy have sought the help of public who play an important role in this regard. This being the status in Kollywood, the Telugu cinedom boasts of having controlled the piracy to a large extent. And my friends who come from that state confirm it’s true. We should probably adapt some best practices from there. But who will answer the mega failure of Gharshana in telugu, the remake of tamil super-hit Kakkha Kakkha. Is that a question to ponder over ?

Maybe, it is time the producers started releasing the movies on VCDs. Say the original VCD is released a couple of weeeks after the movies in theatres by the producers, atleast they can get back the money they put in. The drawback I see in this method is what about the threatre owners. I have no answer to that.
BTW, Any ideas on how the Telugu guys managed to control piracy?

First of all Tamil film directors/music directors / producers should stop copying from English and other movies. First that piracy should be stopped. Then only Originality of the people will come out.

what abt us lesser mortals who live in cities like bangalore where non-local language movies are scheduled to be released only after 7 weeks of its release in its home state….
i feel one way to tackle the VCD menance is to make easy accessibility of tickets to the masses…. the elite and upper middle class book tickets thro the net or phone. its the middle & lower middle class people who dont have access to (or the know-how) to do this and they wudnt want to take the trouble of travelling in the city bus to go to the theatre and lining up to buy tickets and this is the reason why they resort to the VCD which is easily available. i feel, This segment has the maximum of movie watchers. Maybe if theatre owners/producers/movie makers find innovative methods to make tickets available in close proximities…. like say, anniyan movie tickets at specific theatres can be procured from govt approved lottery ticket outlets or vegetable markets or some such places where the masses frequent or even at ranganathan street’s silk / home appliances shops (that shud bring enuf revenue from the fairer sex :-)), it wud be tempting for this mass to buy tickets and that wud ensure their presence at the theatre, all they have to manage is the hassle of travelling…

Jax – I have a clue.
Might be the reason Telugu movies are full of violence, for which people are scared to watch at home and used to go to theatres and watch with lot of auidence.

Hi, I spoke to Parthiban yesterday on the phone (I’ve known him personally, for the past 2 years). He sounded very confident about “Kudaikkul Mazhai” becoming a huge success. He even said stuff like, “I’ll add subtitles when its time to send the movie for awards!” As a well-wisher, I am keeping my fingers crossed, hoping that he’ll be drenched in a panam-mazhai after the movie’s release 🙂
