Film Fare Awards 2005 – And the filmfare award for the best – film, screenplay, direction, camera, back ground music, actor, actress and child artist goes to the cast and crew of BLACK. Will sport a moustache if this doesn’t come true. Sometimes, even if you are stiff emotionsless critic, you fall shaken with emotions when a movie moves so deeply from the heart. Black is one such gem. A classic that can stand over gimmicks and modernities of film techniques.
This was written in this blog, a year back in the review of Bhansali’s Black. Though that review was written very emotionally, I was sure that those moving images of Black deserved a big applause.
Let’s fact check with the Filmfare 2005 which was staged last week.
Best Actor – Amitabh Bachchan (Black)
Best Actress – Rani Mukerjee (Black)
Best Film – Black
Critics Award – Amitabh Bachchan, Rani Mukherjee, Sanjay Leela Bhansali (Black)
Best Director – Sanjay Leela Bhansali (Black)
Best Supporting Actress – Ayesha Kapoor (Black)
Best Cinematography – Ravi K Chandran (Black)
Best Background Score – Monty (Black)
Best Editing – Bela Sehgal (Black)
Except for Screenplay, which was awarded to Nina Arora and Manoj Tyagi (Page 3), what was written, came true. Hurray !! I am not sporting a moustache.

May be a thin one, since the award for the screenplay went off to someone!

This shows how educated the awards committee is! Black no matter how well made is a COPY! It is someone else is work!…the first 40 minutes is a scene by scene copy of the Miracle Worker. And doesnt deserve an award…One can convicne Rani’s and Amitabh’s acting was good…beyond that I think Bansali is overrated, Ayesha Kapoor dint event stand out in the movie, the editing in the movie lagged heavily infact the pace of the movie could have been improved with some slick editing, Monty’s background score…is only decent and not that great!

Cinematography was awesome. Esp the scenes outside home. Eppdi dhaan edukkaraaro, RKChandran.
I could not imagine a movie in this genere in tamil. I appreciate the crew for taking a different story line.
But the movie was artificial in many places. Dats ok. Amithabh’s acting reminded Kamals acting in Mahanadhi and Hey Ram. (Sila idangalil Over acting).

BLACK is a scen by scen lift from MIRACLE WORKER which I saw in my direction classes quite lately. But still Bhansali has done a commendable job. Hats of to our RAVI K CHANDRAN.

I haven’t reason Black yet and I will not. Only reason being it is Sanjay Bhansali’s film. I saw Devdas and could not stand for 5 minutes.

Ayesha Kapoor deserves it. I rate this performance of her as the next best to Baby shamili’s in ‘Anjali’.

Those who have not seen BLACK, should watch it.
Those who are deriding Bhansali for his previous works – watch Khamoshi and then Black. You will know what you are missing.
Those who are saying the music was a no-gooder, I think you need to really keep your ears open and listen. Do not just hear it.
My grandpa can be one of the most unforgiving critics when it comes to movies and impressing him with a movie is like selling a refridgerator to an eskimo. I took him and grandma to watch this movie at PVR cinemas and the moment the movie got over, he told me that he has to get this DVD! Both me and my grandpa have our own copies of the DVD. Black is simply one of those movies that reaffirm the fact that there is no dearth of good script and good filmmaking skills in Bollywood except that money spinning ventures take more dominance than good scripts. How do you explain movies like “Hazar Chauraasi Ki Maa”, “Hazaaron Khwaishein Aise” and “Teen Deewarein”? Some commercial cinema do come out trumps. And by the way – RDB is a commericial success but not as brilliant as Black is. If Black had been sent to the Oscars instead of Paheli, we would have atleast gotten a nomination!

If Black was sent to the Oscars, all the critics would have walked out in the 1st 10 mins. They dont take well to stealing. It was a copy. No matter how good it is,it stands no chance of even being talked about in a good sense much less being nominated.
You can have the same story, but not the scenes and certainly not screenplay.
Besides Oscars as politically driven as filmfare awards,so one may never know.
