Why I like/dislike Selvaraghavan?

Selvaraghavan's Pudupet
[Pic – Dhanush and his ‘team’ in Pudhupettai. Thanks Vikatan]

7G Rainbow Colony made me think, this dude has understood the language of screen than many other seniors of the Tamil film industry. Though I didn’t vibe exactly with what Selvaraghavan tried to convey in 7G Rainbow Colony, I thought it was a much superior and a matured effort than the ‘Guna’ish Kadhal Konden.

Selvaraghavan mostly dwells (from the 3 movies he has made/contributed) on the yuppie side of adolescence with a thin line of pathos running throughout the movie. Its this thin line thats developed into a much larger issue at the climax. The major focus when the movie starts is usually shifted to this under developed sub-plot by the time the movie progresses into the first hour. Now what does this mean? Kadhal Konden started with a happy note on college and what seemed like a college romance suddenly turned into a nail-biting thriller and the guy who seemed as a hero-of-the-friend was developed into a sort of semi-hero. The movie has its own share of silly college comedy and inspirations from several films. I for once certainly didn’t expect Dhanush to turn into a psycho. It came as a sweet shock to me.

7G Rainbow Colony was a complete effort and had Selvaraghavan sparkling as a director. It may not have had the unexpected twists and turns like Kadhal Konden but it had an honest depiction of mediocrity. Infact, it is one of those movies that celebrates mediocrity. Except for that abrupt ending which was a thorn, I enjoyed most part of it.

Selvaraghavan like some of the best directors knows what audience love to see on screen. Even if they don’t like what he shows he knows to brain-wash them with those fabulous set of images [shot by Arvind Krishna, always] to his way of thinking. He knows how to convert a set of ASCII characters of the shooting script into moving images that resemble real life. I enjoyed his series in Vikatan called Kanaa Kaanum Kaalangal.

If we were listing the future architects of kollywood, Selvaraghavan definitely has a pole position. And in the movies to come, I would expect him to capture life as-it-is with more vivid images and compelling stories.

So why would I hate him when one is all praises for him. Its his personality that one can see in every character he shapes. A writer certainly has his personality in some form or other, whether he consciously does it or not, in his characters. A lot of Sujatha’s character can be seen in his characters. Actually its tough to write a book/script by hiding your inherent smartness/dumbness. Selvaraghavan has his personality, his body language hidden in both of his protagonists. What we thought to be Dhanush’s body language and dialogue delivery skills in Kadhal Konden was replicated by Ravi Krishna in 7G Rainbow colony. And it’s irritating. Annoying to know it wasn’t Dhanush’s own talent for which we can take back the accolades given to him on the Kadhal Konden reviews. Also annoying to know that Selva is also like his guru Balachander. And this crib of Balachander’s way to dialogue delivery is imbibed with all his heroines. From Sujatha to Suhasini to Geetha to the girl in Premi, I hate when that body language is repetitive. All of them are radical protagonists like the Sidney Sheldon girls but its truly an over-kill when they walk, talk and act like Balachander himself.

Anyway, I was so impressed by the stills of his next movie Pudupet which stars his famous combo Dhanush-Sonia Agarwal (my fave). His interview[userid/pass required] to Vikatan tells that the movie is a about North Madras and it deals with people as they are. The picture of Sonia Agarwal as a girl from the kuppam seems too good to make me await the movie. I am sure Selvaraghavan would Chennai as it is. Sitting here in Seattle that’s one thing I would love to see.

Lazy, I have to disagree with you on the count that the Body language was Selvaraghavan’s.
Dhanush was still budding with KK and Ravi Krishna is a plain bad Actor. Selvaraghavan very clearly made it out in an interview that he wished he had someone else play the lead in 7/G.

If you talk about dialogues and delivery. How would you rate Mani Ratnam on that? Does it mean you’d hate him?

Besides, you’re comparing just two movies, which is quiet unfair.

    Hemanth,

I know we are sampling with only two of them now. I would be the zillionth soul to say that RK was similar to Dhanush on 7g. And going by his guru’s way, I wouldn’t want Selvaraghavan to go in the same path.

With Mani Ratnam, after all dialogues Mudiyathu…Kandipa Mudiyathu, Kudu….en kitta kuddu style dialogues were done even with thalapathi. Here and there we could still see a tinge of that in his movies. But over all it has gone and I loved to see it go. Just like how he was nicknamed the director of the dark, I think things changed after he had Sujatha doing the dialogues. And yes, I didn’t like those dialogues personally.

Last good movie? Why doesn’t Kadhal count? Agreed, still too long…

Both with KB and SR, drama and eccentricities are king and I believe body language takes a bad seat, unless you really hate this guy’s guts 😉

Here’s why I love this guy. When my Parents/In-Laws watch this film, they can’t stop cursing him, I simply feel great to see them upset. We need more such Directors, and I can hardly see anyone running that race.

Yo !! Hemanth. I agree with that last para of your comment. Still, there are places in 7G and Kadhal Konden which can be spelled as pervertedness. And I agree its a tight rope walk. Selvaraghavan fears none to tread that path.

    Hemanth,

The reason it makes me dislike him is that the body language/dialogue delivery stops me from entering the story myself. The minute you a character is just an actor, you may not be able to enjoy a movie. I am not sure if you agree with this.

    Rajini & Kamal are exceptions.

Hmm.. 7-G Rainbow Colony had some real mediocre stuff. When he said that 7-G was his own story and about K K Nagar (and that his fave parts are the father-son interaction parts, which IMO was portrayed very well!), I felt the movie shifted extremely from what one would call as an ordinary man’s life in K K Nagar, to an “eternal love story-kind” movie!
And handling some of his scenes tend to be,
    1. too overt (like in the song “Kanaa Kaanum Kaalangal”, he holds her in such a position that it borders on unintentional humour.
    2. cliched to shocking levels, like the once-rich-now-poor-family girl accepting to marry a guy (who had to be a high-class pervert – VERY judegemental and playing it to the masses; also seen in Kaadhal Kondaen) for her family’s welfare
.. when only the last scene before that had multi-layers of subtlety and earthliness (like the way Ravi Krishna plays cricket with a pad with her sister in “Kanaa Kaanum Kaalangal”) in it.
In short, Selvaraghavan shocks me with some real good stuff juxtaposed with some real mediocre stuff. That pretty much explains my experience with 7-G (and Kaadhal Kondaen to some extent) and Selvaraghavan.

Zero, that mediocrity you speak of is simply Tamil Movie parlance for compromise-for-the-sake-of-the-Least-common-denominator. Without that we wouldn’t be discussing Selvaraghavan 🙂

“Azhagiya Theeyae” was much redeeming for Tamil Cinema than 7G (IMO) and yet it didn’t not try to be earth-shattering and was unpretentious. [In fact, Azhagiya Theeyae had nothing new, technique-wise or in story-telling (only if you, like I did, were willing to forget the quite unnecessary flashback narration!)].
Here, in case of Selvaraghavan, he has taken the untreaded path in many ways [Take for instance, the way he showed the past of Vinod (Dhanush) in KK. It was off-beat to extreme levels and if a director could go to that levels, then he need not succumb to compromises like having the Aadhi character just to complete a triangle and some stupid “comic” sequences] that some aspects like the ones I had mentioned seem not to be a compromise (like his omnipresent take on the ideal platonic man-woman friendship!), but deliberately present.
And yeah we are discussing so much about Selvaraghavan coz he is good.. As for the rest, we don’t even need this!

Sri Hari/Zero, I donno if you saw chitram but Azhaghiya Theeye was Chitram in tamil. Not that I didn’t like Azhagiya Theeye but having seen Mohanlal doing that role with atmost ease and perfection, in tamil it came nowhere near.

I’m saying this not to kick off a debate about tamil movies and xerox machines but just to tell you Radha Mohan did not ‘create’ this movie. The similar story was made and re-made several times before Azhagiya Theeye. I wouldn’t compare Radha Mohan and Selvaraghavan on same plates. The minute we all call Selvaraghavan treads on an untreaded path, he tends to look beyond these normal stuff. Ofcourse, once in a while, we would love simple movies like Azhagiya Theey but that shouldn’t be putting down Selvaraghavan’s efforts.

Srihari, I agree here with you. If you have to take the entire movie as ‘REAL’ we would have only a stream of conciousness. I think we all accept that cinema is a make believe.

//he need not succumb to compromises like having the Aadhi character just to complete a triangle and some stupid “comic” sequences//

Despite the ‘comic’ sequence of Aadhi’s character in Kadhal Konden, his character got shaped so well until the end and I would say that was an achievement as a story writer. To start a simple ‘comic’ character and making him into a ‘sort-of-a-hero’. Those comic sequence were for the money inside a teenager’s pocket 🙂

Wasn’t Chithram remade already in tamil as “Engirundho Vandhaan” starring Satyaraj (which was an unmistakable dud; the movie as it is didn’t deserve dialogues from Crazy Mohan’s pen; but he did not act kindly too!)? I haven’t seen Chithram myself. But have seen the Satyaraj remake and imagined Chithram as being a good form of the chunk, that is “Engirundho Vandhaan”.
Do you mean to say that in “Azhagiya Theeyae”, not the idea of “Chithram”, but the whole movie is lifted?

OK Zero, let’s pick your example. Aadi is a very important force in the middle. He plays both as a foil (the comic part) and the off-setting factor to setup the 2nd part (middle). He is *the* invisible fulcrum that Dhanush must level with in the final part. If you remember, even in Guna, you had Janagaraj playing a great foil to Kamal. IMO, without him the film would’ve sunk pretty badly.

Staying on Guna, I remember the scene where he convinces Kamal to pick the lock at the temple and assures a “percentage” (of the loot) back to the deity. He then bends forward to wink (implying, he did not mean it) at his other partner. Very subtle, but left me laughing like hell.

I am not saying that the Aadhi character should not have been there at all. But I was not convinced the way it was brought up in the movie. He came of, as only an explanation to why Dhivya cannot love Vinod (and the reason for her falling in love with Aadhi was very unconvincing). Aadhi becomes integral part of the story the way it is weaved in the second half. And in the climax, Dhivya still not wanting to lose Vinod came as unrealistic for me (the “this is friendship”-“this is love” POV). And hey, just for the records, I did like the movie a lot!

Coming to Guna, Janakaraj never comes in the movie unnecessarily. we see him gain importance (as he knows the place where Guna would go**) seamlessly later in the movie.. Here we have Aadhi in the first half doing inane things (the scene where the three sit together and Aadhi proposes to Dhivya is downright stupid – here the “yuppie side”, as Lazy put it spoils the show), just for the heck of it.

** – Aside: That this kind-of proceeding is hinted to the viewer much before is fantastic writing!

I never thought movies like kk& 7grc could b discussed so profoudly. I can’t recollect a single scene from either of these movies. But your feature made 4 some good reading, though.
Dhanush, despite his very common looks & “in need of nourishment” body has made an impact with his sheer energy& ambition (though i dont like him personally, the fact that he has a sizeable fan following proves he has what it takes).
But the other guy, ravikrishna, what an audacity!! no looks, no charisma, absolutely no acting skills.Talk @ wooden face. Sometimes I wish I could whack him just 2 see if I can get an expression out of him.
One of the new guys who I wish would make it big is jeyam ravi. The perfect mixture of innocence& earnestness. This guy can act. He emotes so well.It doesnt hurt that he is such an eyecandy. Tall, great physique, very handsome( in a south indian way).

Then he meets this guy who brings him home to act as his neice’s husband to appease her father. The gal actually falls in love with him, but in the end he gets arrested by the police…

In addition to Selva following Balachander’s path in making the actors act like him, his camera angles are also similar in both the movies, especially i didn’t like the over usage of Orange tint in every frame, see that pudhupet photo, it also has an orange tint. Is this the style of Selva or Arvind Krishna. I do hope “Pudupet” will be more realistic than his previous ventures. Also expecting a diff style of music from Yuvan – Selva combo this time.

Selvaraghavan, KK and 7G are some of the most overrated directors/works of mediocrity in TF industry, IMO
His protagonists are basically zombies and most of the dialogues are not realistically paced. I mean, in many places artificiality seeps in unchecked. His stylized movie-making tends to get mistaken for class.

    KK:
Q1: Would any girl shower kisses on a friend [in a road at that!], and then ask him “unakku edhavadhu thonucha? illa thaane?”

Q2: Somewhere in the 2nd half close to the climax, Dhanush and Sonia “Sleepy” Agarwal are trapped in a house on fire or something [can’t remember exactly) but the important thing is they’re together. In one frame she is shown as being supportive of Dhanush. In the very next frame (not scene), she starts accusing Dhanush, taking a U turn like the BJP. This would later be known as the Selvaraghavan touch.

Q3: I haven’t seen 7G but whatever snippets or trailors i saw convinced me not to risk watching this movie at any cost. This zombie Ravi Krishna just sleep-walks in the movie and his friends are no different. About Sonia, the less said the better. How Sonia reciprocates her love is totally implausible.

And SR has the nerve to say (in an anandha Vigadan intv) “If Mani Ratnam can show glamour and sleaze in his films why pick on me?”!!!

The director being revealed in his movies that is common and in fact expected and accepted to a certain degree.

Mani Ratnam has almost all his heroines the same – from Mouna Raagam to Isha Deol in Ayutha Ezhuthu, Balachander has his commie crap and pseudo feminism following him, Martin Scorsese has his theme too and so does Lynch.

But I guess the trick is in narrating the story well enough to make that characterization seem natural. Selva has just about failed there 😉

Bala, Thats partly true. But thinking about it, why wouldn’t there be people like that. We are not living in an ideal world. I think these happen more than whats depicted int he picture. I have friends better than such ‘stuff’.

Otherwise some of the questions you had rised and valid. As I said they are targeting the teenager’s pocket and its a make believe for the teenagers. And thats where Selva has shades of satan 🙂

I do not agree with the idea that “Azhagiya theeye” was a lift from “Chitram”. If you say random-guy-husband-act was a lift, then it dates way back to “Missiyamma” starring Sambar ganesan. I feel Radha Mohan deserves all credit for the clean entertainer in a fresh background (But none for the latest half-baked “ponniyin selvan” – a good title lost!!!).
Two of the decent (though not great) flicks offlate would be “Arindhum Ariyamalum” and “Ullam Kaetkume”…
I agree with the fact that Dhanush and Ravikrishna closely resembled in their acts in KK and 7G, probably reflecting the director’s enactment behind screen..

Probably Selva enacts so much that it engraves into the minds of his lead actors – very much the Balachandar and Bharatiraja way. 7GRC would have been a more honest attempt had Selva not taken the Moral wand to kill Sonia for having a pre-marital relationship. A next door tale becomes highly filmy when Ravikrishna attempts suicide – he baptizes his Hero from sins of having PMS. And with his “Nenaivugaludan Vazhkai” climax, he eulogizes Ravikrishna (portrayed as a low class porukki scratching cars, hitting guys in a cricket match) to limits of Sanity! Bullsh1t. So why fool people with redundant twists after making them believe that it’s a casual/candid narration of a KK Nagar boy and girl? And if he is in pole we are definitely short of good talent. But I accept he is a tad better than his contemporaries.

OTOH, I thought 7G was a really bad movie. I don’t see anything in it that can be called good. Except BMG, and songs, and even in the songs, it jarred me when I hear the singer not getting her “zh”s right in Ninaithu Ninaithu, and the way she draws loud agonizing breaths between sentences in Kana Kaaanum. The hero RK… pathetic, and oh, the storyline of girl falling for the irresponsible bad guy, and turning him around, I don’t know, it was just the must pulichified maavu being arachified all over again..

Selvaragavan’s films are visually entertaining and ‘shook’ the audience emotionally. When at the end of 7G people leaving the theatre were heavy-hearted and speechless. Leave alone the themes and the eroticness in his films. He is an emerging powerful director in Tamil, having his own screen language.
Both KK and 7G are erotic-love stories. Though KK is not erotic kind of story it was told in that line. Claiming them as classics could be overrating. I see lots of commercialization for ‘teens'(only for teens?). Whatever you mix with sex and love and narrate in an unable-to-censore manner then you’ll get a ‘realistic’ and ‘classic’ I guess. KK is additionally a psycho-thriller in its second half.
What makes people suspect KK might be a classic is the flash back of the orphanage boy which was realistic (that talks about the sexual abuse and murder of orphanage children), Which is a daring directorial effort I see in KK. 7G is dangerously generalising teenage love is nothing but ‘erotic-love’ and nothing else. The dialogue that the hero speaks to the heroine (in the middle of the raining street after the fight) just before the interval is the concept/theme of the whole movie.(It should have ended there itself) But after interval the story has to go somewhere and the director forced to say the ‘message’: ‘before I get married to somebody whom I do not like, why not I ‘give’ myself to you whom I love the most’. (Don’t ask the question, ‘then why the hell you get married then?’).
The ‘postmodernistic’ item here is ‘breaking the value of marriage'(having denegrated her fiancee bad enough to justify that point). The message looks perfectly valid to the society. If you compare ‘poetic-loves’ Vs ‘Erotic-loves’ then compare Alagiya theeyae and 7G. Both are different categories and different in level of emotions (sex is more emotional and uncontrollable).

Selvaragan sets himself apart in his attitude to bring out emotions and sensitiveness of unconventional themes and looks beyond the usual stigma and question them too.
Kathal Kondaen was remarkable and made a great impact, with Dhanush’s sensitive performance.
But..the climax of 7G was different to know and mostly felt like youthful confusions left unexplained.
But,his themes are mostly of the critical ones, but doesnt surely compromise values, reality or integrity. He sure seems to be a promising director, with a brave or matured outlook and I think his best are yet to come.

Selvaraghavan is Good, not the best.
He has the talent of putting the songs in the right time… and the way he telling the story is also good.
But look at the characters of Kadhal Kondane ! The second Hero , Other than Danush , Sorry I dont know his name . Look at
his character, .. from that character Selva got the Hero Character of 7/G , i think.
I am sure Puthupettai is going to be a very good film. but with two heroin’s both very Famous.. and talented .. i think both of them
will have good roles in the movie… then Comes Danush// Then Some Songs.
then where is the time to say the story of Gangsters as the ad. are saying!!
Yes.. One can say the story ! but /… /
Hope Selva .. U won’t do mistakes like some of the other Tamil Films like
Thamizh( Prasanth ) and some VijayKanth’s and Sarathkumar’s Hilms.
The Fim THAMIZH could have made far far better , by not giving importance to Heroin and Comodiens.

what i like in your film is that ., there wont be any irritating Comediens in your Films
The Comody Scenes in 7/g where superb. it’s better than adding a parellel story line

Selvaraghavan’s style is to take up an underdog and project him big time. The twist in the end is added just so that our sympathy for the underdog increases.

come on guys c the good thing imagine what every tamil film today is like whether its Haris or Ramanaas actually they seem the same. U c the masalasbut nothing close to my heart u dont feel anything after getting out of the theatre .I am not a great watcher of tamil films but when i hear a selva raghavan film u feel an internal urge to watch it .And i disagree that his films are the same as
balachander. He is a daring film maker no other commercial dir has brought the issue of sexual abuse and PMS into his film
i didnt like KK much because a frnd who had seen the film had given me an idea abt the film .Some scenes in the moview were amateurish but i saw the spark and when i saw 7g i was mesmerised .Its a very beautiful story and just because a hot scene was enacted in the movie doesnt mean that its abt PMS only.To me that scene
made no diff to my idea abt the film.I thought there was no need for it.I think selva introduced to the scene just to give a diff or give some spice (pls yaar he wants his flms to rake some moolah!).Whatever we have to argue abt his film asthetics i wud vouch that he is quite a nauch above the ordinary not because he uses brilliant sets or brilliant stories. But i c his personality
in his films which not any ordinary film maker would do.U c a sankar film does the film indicate any innermost thoughts abt the film makers mind?.U
go into the theatre enjoy the 3 hrs and after cing the film asking ourselves “why the movie”?
Only a handful of film makers have brought their own individual echo into their films like “GuruDutt, Mani, RamGopalVarma”etc. So lets give the guy his due whatever his films lack, his film gives me the High!

my most favourite director is our pathbreaker selvaraghavan.

according to me kathal kondaen is an innovative psycho thriller, and 7/g,rainbow colony is the world’s best love story.
i wasn’t able to sleep for four days after watching that.

titanic might be made on a higher cxost ,but 7/g affects or sinks into ones heart unlike titanic.
definitely 7/g is far ahead(great) than titanic.

i agree with prabashalini, he is the best director . i never get satisfied with films.
7/g was one of the few films that gave me satisfaction.

and one more thing ,dont ever compare azhageeya theeye with 7/g.

some may like the former ,but i dont want to affect ur feelings by commenting on it.
7/g is far far faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar better film than azhageeya theeye.

Kadhal Konden is the best movie I’ve ever seen and it will remain in my heart forever.I’ve never seen anyone play a character with such reality and dedication.I mean Dhanush, of course!Dhanush has a bright future and it might be Selvaraghavan who brightens it up.Selva is an A-1 director, though his films are sometimes vulgar. He is now one of the best and will be so in the times to come.No one should under estimate Selvaraghavan!
