[Surya as Michael Vasant]
This year wasn’t a year of performances. We didn’t have an array of classic acts that were tough to choose from. With the little lot that kollywood saw this year it wasn’t like a photo-finish.
This year’s little group of acts included Kamal as the naive Virumandi, Surya as Perzhagan ‘hunch back’ Chinna, Surya as the intellectual Michael Vasanth and Parthiban as a Schizophrenic in Kudaikkul Mazhai.
Not Virumandi Kamal, for various reasons. Not Perzhaghan Surya. Again for various reasons. One explainable reason was that, Michael Vasanth whizzed past us with the tag ‘Actor of the Year’.
Virumandi had a soul-searching role. Kamal Hassan was missing. The story, the screenplay and the cast stayed with us and but Kamal just overplayed the role of director that he lost his focus on Kamal-the-actor. However, it was worth a mention. Parthiban’s single act in Kudaikkul Mazhai was a neat job except that his screenplay didn’t support him too much. Perzhaghan Surya was just patient with his hunch-back makeup. His characterisation walked away with the sympathies. Surya-the-actor was to be googled. The character won, however.
Surya as Michael Vasant in Aayitha Ezhuthu was the perfect choice. Hats Off goes to Mani Ratnam for casting Surya. Michael Vasant, a rebel, a prodigy and a progressive youth was impersonated with a class by Surya. It was his amazing timing and his perfect-perfect body language that really captured the soul of Michael Vasanth. Like Kakkha Kakkha, Surya downplayed himself to suit the role. Surya was also perfect with his intonations.

Yeah,my vote for Surya,but then Lazy can you elaborate where Kamal lost his focus?..coming to the next category..actresses..the contenders are (as usual) very few..Vimal has already pointed out both of them…my vote more or less goes to Abhirami….the young girl really did an amazing job as Anna laxmi..though Sonia has done a great job..it’s something an actress of her age can play easily..a college girl..but Annalaxmi surely would have needed homework..Abhi did that convincingly..let’s c..LG…Who’s ur choice..

No other option. Yeah Surya only. But I feel that role was overrated. Except for 1 or 2 scenes he hadnt done that much of a great job. And you rightly said when there is not much choice.
And the term actress is politically incorrect right? Both male and female are referred to as actors. Aint it?

Just off from the topic…Dhanush may not feature even in the top 100 in the category for Best Actor, but Lazy, if you have a category for Best Marriage for year 2004, he might be right on the top… What say you??

hey.. i wonder how u ppl find sonia agrawal’s performance comparable to what abhirami did in virumaandi.. so much steeped in mediocrity, huh?
the basic flaw in today’s actresses i feel is not knowing the language. if they wud know the language, they wud not try to show so much of the “acting stuff” on their face when they talk as they actually do… they think they need to show pain, sorrow etc. all on their face (as they dont know what the dubbing artiste is gonna do to their role, :), and end up becoming infinitely degraded sivaji’s over-emoting.
annalakshmi, for me, goes on the lines of shakthi in alaipayuthey (yeah. tht role was done with elan by shalini, again dubbing for herself) considering the movies in recent times. for me, sonia agrawal’s performance (in fact, all of the so-called good performances in recent times. leave aside bad ones. they are of the terminator-arnold-kind) should be for silent movies era.
